"Jumpstarting creativity using altered books and alternative materials"

Susan Colburn Motta is an Illinois native who now resides in Maine where she has been developing her art practice over the past 40 years. She was educated at Iowa State University, Ames, the University of Southern Maine, Portland, Goddard College in Vermont and Lesley University in Cambridge, Massachusetts.

She works in mixed media, including various water-based paints, inks and drawing materials, oils, encaustics, print-making, collage with hand-made and altered or found papers, fibers and other natural and found materials. Her goal is to move materials beyond their original purpose, to push them into new areas of meaning. She is also interested in the relationship between text and image, often using text as image, both in her collages and in the form of artist’s books.

Susan teaches drawing and design at the University of Southern Maine as well as facilitating creativity classes, demos and workshops for arts organizations.
